Pick the side of the volcano first
Etna is large, and its villages are spread around the slopes. Three of them work as bases for visitors: Nicolosi on the south slope, Zafferana Etnea on the east slope and Linguaglossa on the north-east slope. The cable car, the Silvestri craters and the AST bus all belong to the south side. The north side has Piano Provenzana and its own tours. Choosing a base on the wrong side adds driving time to every excursion.
Do not confuse village and station. Nicolosi lies at about 700 m, while the cable car starts at 1,923 m at Rifugio Sapienza, which is also in the municipality of Nicolosi. Zafferana Etnea is about 574 m high and Linguaglossa about 550 m. If you prefer a city base, Catania and Taormina have their own accommodation guides, and both are day trips to the volcano. This is an independent guide and does not rate or sell rooms.

Etna tours with pick-up and meeting points
Guided trips to both sides of the volcano, jeep excursions and wine days, with live prices and availability.
Nicolosi, Zafferana Etnea and Linguaglossa
What each base is useful for.
Nicolosi, for the south side
The village is the gateway to Rifugio Sapienza and the cable car, which is reached by a road that climbs from Nicolosi. Staying here shortens the drive to the start of the south side. Remember that the cable car runs from 08:30 and that a Tour 3000 package costs โฌ82 in 2026.
Cable car guide โZafferana Etnea, on the east slope
A village on the other side of the mountain from the cable car. It is sometimes treated as an alternative to Nicolosi, but it is not the same as the south station. Check the drive to your meeting point before you book.
Linguaglossa, for the north side
The Mareneve road to Piano Provenzana starts at Linguaglossa, and north-side tours start at Piano Provenzana, above the village. A north package from one operator costs โฌ69 for adults and โฌ50 for children (2026) and lasts about 2.5 hours. The village also lies near wineries, so it suits a stay built around wine tours.
Rifugio Sapienza, on the mountain
A hotel and restaurant operate directly at the south square at around 1,910 m, next to the cable car base. Staying here means no drive up in the morning. Ask the hotel about current prices and room availability.
Getting around from each base
With and without a car.
With a car
A car makes any village work, and it is the easiest way to switch between the south and north sides. In snow and ice, roads can close, as an order of 22 January 2026 showed for parts of the road to the Silvestri craters and the Mareneve road.
Without a car
The AST bus runs from Catania to Rifugio Sapienza, so a Catania base fits a day on the south side. Check the timetable for stops on the way, because the bus leaves Catania at 08:15 and returns at 16:30. For other villages, ask your host about transfers and tour pick-up.
Getting there from the coast โCatania or Taormina as a base
A coastal base keeps you in town, but every Etna day starts with a road of one to two hours. It works best for one or two excursions. If Etna is the main reason for your trip, sleep on the volcano's slopes.
When to book
Weather and road conditions change the plan, so choose rooms with a flexible cancellation rule and read the best time to visit page first.

Where to stay near Etna: frequently asked questions
Which village is best for Mount Etna?
It depends on the side you want. Nicolosi is the base for the cable car and the south side, Linguaglossa for the north side and Zafferana Etnea for the east slope.
Is Nicolosi next to the cable car?
No. The village is at about 700 m, while the cable car starts at 1,923 m at Rifugio Sapienza, higher up the road.
Can I sleep on the mountain?
Yes. The hotel at Rifugio Sapienza sits on the square at the south side, next to the cable car base. Ask the hotel directly for prices and dates.
Can I stay in Catania or Taormina and visit Etna?
Yes. Both are starting points for the AST bus, guided tours and car trips. Plan for a long day, as the road takes one to two hours each way.
Do I need a car if I sleep in a village?
A car gives the most freedom. Otherwise book a tour that picks you up, or check with your host how to reach your meeting point.
