Etna tours: what you are really buying
Most Etna tours are built from the same parts: a cable car or off-road vehicle, a guide and sometimes a walk. The parts differ by side of the volcano. On the south side everything starts at Rifugio Sapienza, a mountain hut and hotel above Nicolosi. On the north side it starts at Piano Provenzana near Linguaglossa.
Many listings below start in Catania or Taormina, others meet you at the mountain. Check the meeting point first, because it decides whether you need a car or a bus. If you plan the journey yourself, read the page on getting to Etna from Catania and Taormina. For the towns themselves, see Catania tours and Taormina tours.

Etna tours compared
Prices are 2026 adult prices as published by the operators. Add-ons are not summed up.
| Type | Starts at | Includes | Price 2026 | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cable car only (2500 ticket) | Rifugio Sapienza | Cable car return, online fast track | โฌ54 | Ends at 2,500 m |
| Tour 3000 (south side) | Rifugio Sapienza | Cable car return, off-road bus or snow vehicle return, alpine or volcanological guide | โฌ82 adult, โฌ51 child aged 5 to 10 | Height set by the authorities |
| North side package | Piano Provenzana | Guide, special transport, accident insurance | โฌ69 adult, โฌ50 child | Height depends on current rules |
| North side summit hike | Piano Provenzana | Guide and walk, transport ticket sold separately | โฌ60 plus โฌ60 transport | Goal depends on current rules |
| Wine tasting | Winery near Linguaglossa | Tasting with local food | โ | Transfer to be checked |
The Tour 3000 name is a product name, not a promise. The reachable height depends on the rules in force, so nobody can guarantee a summit or a visit to every active crater rim. The north side prices come from one operator. Do not add parts from different operators and expect a package.

Etna jeep tours and off-road buses
What a four-wheel-drive ride can and cannot do.
South side
Tour 3000 uses an off-road bus, or a snow vehicle when there is snow, from the top station of the cable car upwards. Both are part of the package and both come back with you.
North side
One north side operator uses special vehicles from Piano Provenzana towards Pizzi Deneri and Piano delle Concazze. It also stops at craters formed in 2002.
Protected area
The World Heritage area is a strictly protected part of the regional park. Driving on forest and mountain tracks is controlled and limited to authorised activities. A jeep tour is therefore not a way to drive wherever you like.
Procedure under way
On 9 March 2026 the park documented a request by the municipalities of Linguaglossa and Castiglione di Sicilia for an impact assessment of tourist off-road traffic between Piano Provenzana and the summit area. A request is not an approval. Ask the operator which route is allowed on your date.
What to check before you book
The points that decide whether a tour is good value.
Meeting point
Some south side tours meet you at the cable car station on Piazzale Rifugio Sapienza in Nicolosi, even when the listing mentions a transfer. Read the start location line on the booking page.
Included parts
List what is in the price: cable car, bus, guide, helmet, boots, insurance. A package that leaves out the cable car looks cheaper than it is.
Height and goal
Ask which height the group reached on recent days. Titles that mention 3,000 m or more describe an aim, not a guarantee.
Start time
Some north side listings show different first departures in the header and the description. Confirm the time in your booking confirmation.
Health
The cable car operator does not recommend the experience for people with heart or respiratory conditions, high blood pressure or pregnancy. This is an operator recommendation, not medical advice.
Clothing
Hiking boots and a windbreaker are recommended even in summer. The top station is at 2,500 m, and the weather turns quickly. Ask what the operator lends.
Tour or on your own?
The trade-offs on Etna.
Pros of a tour
One booking covers vehicle, guide and the summit rules of the day. You do not need to read municipal ordinances.
Cons of a tour
The date is fixed. A cloudy day can still reach you, and you cannot stay longer at the top.
Pros of going alone
The cable car and the Silvestri craters work well without a guide, and you pick the clearest day.
Cons of going alone
Above the cable car you need a guide in the restricted zone. See the hiking rules for the limits.
Etna tours: frequently asked questions
How much does an Etna tour cost?
In 2026 the cable car alone is listed at โฌ54. The Tour 3000 package, with off-road bus and guide, is listed at โฌ82 for adults and โฌ51 for children aged 5 to 10. One north side package costs โฌ69 for adults and โฌ50 for children.
How long do Etna tours take?
The south and north packages take about 2.5 hours. Longer tours that include a walk, lunch or a winery take several hours. Check the duration on the booking page.
Can a tour guarantee the summit?
No. The height you reach depends on the rules of the day and on the alert phase. Tour names with a height describe the aim.
Do I need a guide?
In the restricted summit zone, at alert phase ATTENZIONE, yes. On the cable car and on the Silvestri loop you walk without one. See the hiking page.
Is a wine tasting on Etna a good alternative in bad weather?
It can be, because it does not depend on the summit. Ask the winery about opening times and whether a transfer is included. See the wine tours page.
